Start with the recovery steps below. If the problem remains, send a short description and the device and Ink version you are using—never send a private note unless you choose to.

A note is not where you expected

  1. Open Trash in Ink and restore the note if it was deleted.
  2. Search by a distinctive phrase; title and full-text search both work offline.
  3. Open Version History from the note menu to restore an earlier saved version.
  4. If you enabled the readable iCloud Drive backup on an Apple device, check iCloud Drive → Ink → Notes for the managed Markdown copy. Favorited and bookmarked notes also have category copies in Ink → Favorites and Ink → Bookmarks.

About the Ink folder in iCloud Drive

The Ink folder is a readable backup and browsing mirror, not a second editor. Create, rename, delete, and restore notes in Ink; the managed Markdown copies reconcile after sync. Changes made directly in Files or Finder are not imported into Ink.

iCloud is pending or unavailable

  1. Confirm the device is signed into iCloud and iCloud Drive is enabled for Ink.
  2. Keep Ink open briefly on a stable connection, then use Sync now.
  3. Check that iCloud storage is available and network restrictions allow uploads.
  4. Never remove the local app until you have exported a backup of important work.

Before a repair or reinstall

Export the workspace as Markdown and verify the exported files open correctly. An app reinstall can remove the local database before an unfinished iCloud upload completes.

AI is not responding

Your writing remains local when an AI request fails. Confirm the selected provider, model, credential, and network connection, then retry. For local Ollama, confirm its service is running. Ink previews generated text and never needs to overwrite a note to complete an AI request.
